Pomona, California, is witnessing a surge in community-driven initiatives aimed at fostering environmental sustainability and resilience. Local organizations and institutions are actively engaging residents to create a greener and more sustainable city.
Community-Led Environmental Efforts
Clean & Green Pomona is at the forefront of these efforts, focusing on urban greening, park advocacy, and anti-pollution policies. Since 2017, the organization has partnered with the Pomona Unified School District and the City of Pomona to plant over 1,300 trees on public lands, significantly enhancing the city’s urban forest. Their initiatives also include advocating for robust park impact fees for developers and promoting the establishment of a comprehensive parks master plan to achieve the city’s goal of three acres of parkland per 1,000 residents.
Another notable initiative is Pomona Activated for Community Transformation and Sustainability (Pomona ACTS). This community-driven effort addresses transportation, renewable energy, green infrastructure, and community health. Rooted in social justice and collaboration, Pomona ACTS aims to transform the city’s core through local, community-led projects that improve public health, strengthen the local economy, and build a shared sense of community.
Institutional Commitment to Sustainability
Pomona College is also making significant strides toward sustainability. The college’s Sustainable Action Visible Effects (SAVE) strategic plan outlines measurable strategies to achieve ambitious sustainability goals, including reaching carbon neutrality by 2030. Key initiatives under this plan involve reducing energy consumption, increasing renewable energy sources, and constructing buildings that meet LEED Gold standards or higher.
For instance, the college has installed rooftop solar photovoltaic systems on 12 buildings, generating approximately 2% of the campus’s annual electricity usage. Notable projects include the Center for Athletics, Recreation and Wellness, which achieved LEED Platinum certification and hosts a 64 kW rooftop solar project, and Frank Dining Hall, powered by a 63 kW rooftop solar system.
City’s Energy Efficiency Initiatives
The City of Pomona has demonstrated a strong commitment to energy efficiency by partnering with Southern California Edison through the San Gabriel Valley Energy Wise Partnership. This collaboration aims to reduce energy usage across the San Gabriel Valley. The city has developed an interdepartmental “Green Team,” created a city “Green Plan,” and completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, showcasing its dedication to improving environmental quality and sustainability.
Addressing Climate Change Risks
Despite these proactive measures, Pomona faces significant climate change risks, including drought, fire, and heat. According to ClimateCheck, the city has a very high drought risk, with projections indicating that drought conditions are likely to become more frequent and severe. Community and institutional efforts are crucial in mitigating these risks and enhancing the city’s resilience to climate change.
Through collaborative efforts between community organizations, educational institutions, and local government, Pomona is making commendable progress toward environmental sustainability. Continued engagement and proactive initiatives will be essential in building a resilient and sustainable future for the city.
